Project News: FeedMAP successfully holds final workshop
Date: 17 October 2008
The EC-supported, ERTICO-coordinated FeedMAP project held its final workshop on 9 October 2008 in Trento (Italy). Almost 60 participants, including representatives from the public and private sectors, listened to speeches and technical presentations on the FeedMAP final results. Participants also had the opportunity to visit the exhibition where all test sites showcased their results. The re-mapping of the streets of Trento was demonstrated on board 6 vehicles specifically equipped for the occasion.
The FeedMAP project studies the commercial and technical feasibility of map deviation feedback. The project has developed a framework that detects map anomalies, when any car equipped with a digital map encounters a faulty map attribute. Maps in other vehicles are updated instantly, using a standardised mechanism developed in the ActMAP project.
The workshop was opened by welcome and introductory speeches by Project Coordinator Maxime Flament (ERTICO – ITS Europe) and CRF Director Antonio Fuganti. Elina Holmberg, the EC project officer (DG INFSO) presented her positive views on how FeedMAP can contribute to road safety and gave more details about the project context. Filippo Visintainer (CRF) gave an overview of all FeedMAP requirements and specifications and Michael Landwehr (PTV) listed the different demonstrations and stands opened to visitors. During the afternoon session, presentations focused on the FeedMAP final results validation and next steps.
Visitors could try the FeedMAP-equipped vehicles. ERTICO Partners BMW and Navteq presented the FeedMAP full loop (from map deviation detection to map updates) for speedlimits, while CRF and Magnetti Marelli focused their demonstration on the integration of the FeedMAP client into a commercially available navigation system, Daimler showed some autonomous map deviation detection and PTV focused on the FeedMAP service centre.
The workshop was immediately followed by the project final review through the EC representatives, with feedback on the project and the workshop day. Reviewers were given the opportunity to ask for details about any aspect of the project which remained unclear. Their first feedback was highly positive. The consortium will now concentrate on successfully closing the project by the end of October.
The FeedMAP/ActMAP Forum is open to all actors who are interested in incremental map updates with feedback loop in future in-vehicle applications or services. Membership is free and offers participants the opportunity to closely follow the progress of FeedMAP and directly communicate with the project’s core team.
